Dance Distributors, a company synonymous with being "The Dancer's Source for Value" since its origination in 1940.
Customer satisfaction was as valuable to Dance Distributors' founder over 60 years ago as it is to his grandson three generations later. Herman Sussman opened the Youth Centre, Dance Distributors' parent company, in 1940, as an exclusive infants, children, juniors and misses retail store in downtown Harrisburg, PA. The store prospered due in large part to its reputation for one-on-one personalized customer service.

Herman's son Bob joined the business in 1948 and soon established a distinct dancewear department to outfit students attending the growing number of local dance schools. In 1962, Bob's wife, Cynthia, joined in running the growing dance department. Dance teachers and students started to rely on Cynthia's expertise in fitting pointe shoes and dancers came from miles away to receive the best service possible. As her staff grew, Cynthia personally trained each one in the intricacies of pointe shoe fitting and dancers' other specialized needs. In fact, four of Cynthia's trained Dancewear Specialists continue to serve Dance Distributors' customers today.

In the mid-eighties Bob saw the continued growth of dance and thought dancers across the country would appreciate Dance Distributors' commitment to customer service. To that end, Bob launched the first ever discount dancewear catalog with the mailing of Dance Distributors' catalog in 1987. From the start, the Dance Distributors catalog was about more than just about providing low prices on dance shoes and apparel. Bob continuously stressed to Dance Distributors' staff their part in providing value, exceptional customer service and quick delivery of dance apparel and shoes to dancers everywhere. To this day, Dance Distributors' credo lives up to Bob's commitment: Dance Distributors: The Dancer's Source for Value.
Inevitably, the store from which Dance Distributors grew closed its doors to the public, in order to focus its energy on the ever-growing catalog business. To better serve dancers with a larger inventory, Dance Distributors moved to a 77,000 square foot warehouse in 1996. That same year, Bob and Cynthia both retired. Bob continues to monitor Dance Distributors' progress from an office next to his son, Mark, Dance Distributors' current president and one of those Dancewear Specialists originally trained by his mother, Cynthia.
Dance Distributors' user-friendly color catalog that you know today was once a 6-page, black-and-white print catalog. The first catalog in 1987 was produced with no pictures, few descriptions and carried just two manufacturers' products, Capezio and Danskin. Over time, more manufacturers were added including Bloch in 1988 and Dance Distributors' own exclusive line of apparel and shoes in 1995. The Dance Distributors catalog went full color in Fall 2000 and was totally redesigned to its current user-friendly format in Fall 2003. Dance Distributors has also added a full color Worship Dance Catalog with the latest innovations in apparel to meet the specific needs requested by the Worship Dance community.
